Victorian marriages "were permanent".Why? Because they were sanctified by church. Religious sanction was measure against too fast divorce and forced to select partner for marriage more thoroughly(no matter wife or husband). But stability of marriage created another problems.If wife or husband get sick or insane, divorce was very difficult at that time. Another problem was that feelings of both spouses were not taken into account in 90% of marriages in Victorian era.The main motivation of marriage often were profit. Money or advantages.
Why do not about half of modern marriages last?
Because people mostly aren't sure in their feelings. To prevent this it would be useful to introduce good practice invented many years ago by Chinese people: firstly at least three years of acquaintance(of possible wife and husband) and then marriage (in case of mutual agreement).
